If you're an Indian student planning to study in Germany, the APS certificate is the first real checkpoint you need to clear. Not your university application. Not your visa. The APS.
Most students lose weeks — sometimes months — because they don't understand what APS actually requires, what documents to send, or what the process really looks like from the inside. This guide fixes that. It's based on real experience helping 1,200+ students through the Germany admission process.
June 2026 update: APS India introduced the dMAT (Digital Master Test) on June 29, 2026 — a new mandatory academic aptitude test for Master's applicants in Engineering, Commerce, and Business fields. A completely new section below covers this in full detail.
Do I Qualify for APS? Quick Eligibility Check
| Your Situation | Do You Qualify? | Pathway |
|---|---|---|
| Class XII with 70%+ marks | ✅ Yes | Studienkolleg → Bachelor's |
| Class XII (70%+) + 1 year (2 semesters) of Bachelor's completed | ✅ Yes | Direct Bachelor's admission |
| Class XII with below 70% marks | ❌ No | Review alternative pathways |
| Completed Bachelor's from UGC-recognized university | ✅ Yes | Master's in Germany |
| Class XII + JEE Main & Advanced cleared | ✅ Yes | Direct Bachelor's (TestAS exempted) |
| Distance/Online degree in medicine, law, architecture, nursing, pharmacy, hotel management | ❌ No | Not recognized by APS |
| Degree from private university without full UGC accreditation ("H+" in Anabin) | ❌ No | Check Anabin before applying |
Don't rely on generic eligibility advice from forums. Take the official eligibility quiz at aps-india.de — but understand that even the quiz doesn't cover every edge case. If you're unsure about your specific combination of qualifications, that's exactly the kind of thing we sort out on a Clarity Call.
What Is the APS Certificate and Why Do You Need It?
APS stands for Akademische Prüfstelle — the Academic Evaluation Centre. It's operated under the German Embassy in New Delhi. Its only job: verify that your Indian academic documents are genuine.
German universities don't have the infrastructure to individually verify thousands of Indian marksheets, transcripts, and degrees. APS does it once, centrally. You get a certificate, and every German university and the visa office accepts it.
- Confirms your documents are genuine — marksheets, transcripts, and degrees verified directly with your schools and universities.
- Determines your eligibility pathway — whether you qualify for direct admission, Studienkolleg, or need additional qualifications.
- Unlocks your visa application — without APS, the German Embassy will not process your student visa.
The APS certificate has lifetime validity once issued. Apply once, use it for multiple university applications across Germany.
The 70% Threshold: Do You Qualify for Bachelor's?
Effective 15 March 2026, APS India requires a minimum overall score of 70% of the maximum achievable marks in your Class XII certificate for Bachelor's-level applications.
This affects every Indian student applying for Bachelor's-level studies from Winter Semester 2026/27 onwards, regardless of board — CBSE, ICSE, state boards, all of them.
The Two Pathways Under the New Rule
Pathway 1 — Studienkolleg Route: Class XII with 70%+ → APS Certificate → Subject-restricted admission via Studienkolleg.
Pathway 2 — Direct Bachelor's Route: Class XII with 70%+ + successfully completed one full academic year (2 semesters) of a Bachelor's program at a recognized Indian institution → APS Certificate → Direct subject-restricted admission.
The 70% threshold is calculated on your overall marks, not individual subjects. Completing one year of Bachelor's alone is not enough — you need BOTH the 70% in Class XII AND the completed academic year. Applications submitted before 15 March 2026 were assessed under the old criteria.
The New dMAT Test — Everything Indian Students Need to Know (2026)
On 29 June 2026, APS India announced the dMAT (Digital Master Test) — a new academic aptitude test that is now a mandatory part of the APS process for selected Master's applicants from India. If you are applying for a Master's degree in Germany for Summer Semester 2027 or any intake after that, and your bachelor's degree is in Engineering, Commerce, or Business/Management — you need this test before APS will issue your final certificate.
This section answers every question. Read it fully before you register for anything.
⚠️ Already in the APS pipeline? You may be fully exempt. You do NOT need the dMAT if: (1) you completed your APS online registration before 29 June 2026, OR (2) you shipped your complete physical documents to Delhi before 29 June 2026, OR (3) you already received your APS certificate. If any of these applies — you're done, no dMAT needed for this APS procedure. Keep proof of shipment just in case APS asks.
What Exactly Is the dMAT?
The full name is Digital Master Test. It is a standardised academic aptitude test — computer-based, taken at a licensed test centre in India (not from home), conducted entirely in English. It runs for approximately 3.5 hours with a break in the middle.
The test has two modules:
- Core Module — tests general cognitive and analytical skills: figure sequences, mathematical equations, Latin squares. This measures how you reason and think, not what you have memorised.
- Subject Module (General Academic Module) — for APS India applicants, you take the General Academic Module. This tests subject-specific knowledge application — not rote facts, but how you apply what you know to solve problems. All questions are single-choice format.
The dMAT was developed by universities in collaboration with g.a.s.t. and has been supported by DAAD. It is the same organisation behind TestDaF and TestAS.
Who Is g.a.s.t.? (And Why You Need to Know This)
g.a.s.t. stands for Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung e.V. — the Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development, based at the TestDaF Institut in Bochum, Germany. This is the same organisation that runs TestDaF (German language test) and TestAS (study aptitude test for international students).
Responsibilities are split clearly between APS India and g.a.s.t.:
| What | Who Handles It | Contact |
|---|---|---|
| Academic document verification (marksheets, degrees, transcripts) | APS India | info@aps-india.de |
| APS certificate issuance (with dMAT result reflected) | APS India | aps-india.de |
| dMAT registration, payment, test center booking | g.a.s.t. | kontakt@gast.de |
| dMAT administration on test day | g.a.s.t. | d-mat.de/en |
| dMAT certificate issuance and download | g.a.s.t. | gast.de/portal |
| Technical issues with dMAT portal | g.a.s.t. | kontakt@gast.de |
Never contact APS India about your dMAT registration or score. And never contact g.a.s.t. about your APS documents. They are two entirely separate processes running in parallel.
Is the dMAT Mandatory for APS?
Yes — but only for a specific group, and only for specific intakes. Here is the exact checklist. You need the dMAT if all four of these are true:
- You are applying for a Master's degree in Germany (not Bachelor's, not PhD).
- Your bachelor's degree is in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management.
- You are targeting Summer Semester 2027 or any later intake.
- You completed your APS online registration on or after 29 June 2026.
If even one of those four conditions doesn't apply to you — you don't need the dMAT right now.
Complete List of Who Is Exempt
- Applicants who registered on APS before 29 June 2026 (even if documents not yet shipped).
- Applicants who shipped complete documents before 29 June 2026 (even if APS processing is still ongoing).
- Applicants who already received their APS certificate.
- All Bachelor's applicants — dMAT is only for Master's.
- All PhD and PostDoc applicants.
- Applicants in exchange programs, double-degree programs, or university partnership programs — submit confirmation from your institution including group number.
- Applicants whose bachelor's degree is outside the three affected field categories — Arts, Sciences (non-engineering), Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, Architecture, Education, Social Work, etc.
- Applicants targeting Winter Semester 2026/27 — first dMAT scores only available 12 October 2026, after WiSe 2026/27 deadlines.
Key Dates — First dMAT Cycle in India
| Milestone | Date | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Registration opens | 29 June 2026 | Via g.a.s.t. portal at gast.de |
| Registration closes | 15 September 2026 | Register early — seats allocated first-come |
| Test date | 26 September 2026 | Computer-based at licensed test centers |
| Results available | 12 October 2026 | Download from g.a.s.t. test taker portal |
| First applicable intake | Summer Semester 2027 | WiSe 2026/27 is NOT affected |
| Certificate validity | Indefinite | No expiry — you sit it once |
Test Centers in India
The dMAT is conducted at licensed g.a.s.t. test centers. You cannot take it online from home. For the first test date (26 September 2026), the following cities have centers: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune.
Seats are allocated strictly first-come, first-served when you register. If your preferred city is full, you must pick another available location. APS India cannot reserve seats — this is handled entirely by g.a.s.t.
How Much Does the dMAT Cost?
The dMAT fee is €150 paid directly to g.a.s.t. during registration. This is in addition to the ₹18,000 APS verification fee you pay to APS India. They are two separate payments to two separate organizations. Refund conditions: see d-mat.de/en/terms-conditions/.
What Does Your dMAT Score Mean? How Is It Calculated?
Your dMAT certificate shows two separate scores:
- dMAT Score (0–200 scale, mean 100) — a conversion of your total correct answers to a standardised scale. The mean across all test takers globally is 100. Separate scores are shown for the core module and subject module, plus a total.
- Percentile Rank — what percentage of all participants scored lower than or equal to you. A percentile of 70 means 70% of test takers scored the same or lower, 30% scored higher.
The score is reported on a standardised scale because the dMAT is normed across all test centers and all test dates globally — meaning your result is directly comparable regardless of where or when you took the test.
The Critical Loophole — What Does No German University Actually Require the dMAT?
Here's what almost every article covering dMAT is not saying clearly: as of today, only two German universities — RWTH Aachen University and Georg-August University Göttingen — actively use the dMAT as a selection criterion, and only for specific programs at those institutions. RWTH Aachen uses it for Master's in Battery Science and Technology (80% of the admission decision based on dMAT). Göttingen uses it for Master's in Applied Data Science.
Every other German university has not publicly announced any dMAT requirement for admission. The dMAT is currently an APS documentation requirement — meaning you need it to complete your APS certificate. But whether any given German university will actually use your dMAT score in their admission decision is entirely up to that university. They receive the score on your APS certificate, and then decide independently what to do with it.
The honest reality: the dMAT is currently a €150 expense that gets your APS certificate issued — and for the vast majority of German programs, the score itself doesn't affect whether you get admitted or rejected. A weak score doesn't disqualify you from APS. A strong score doesn't guarantee admission. It is information that universities can use, not a threshold they currently enforce.
Will this change? Possibly. As more test cycles complete and universities see score data, more programs may start using dMAT scores in selection. But right now, the footprint is two universities and two specific programs. We'll update this section the moment that changes.
Does a Good dMAT Score Actually Matter for Admission?
For most programs at most German universities today — no, not significantly. Here is what the official APS India language says: "the dMAT result does not replace the admission decision of the German higher education institution. Universities decide individually how to use the dMAT results."
In practice this means: the dMAT score appears on your APS certificate. Every university admissions team you apply to will see it. Some may glance at it, most currently ignore it for admission purposes. The two exceptions right now are RWTH Aachen (Battery Science program) and Georg-August Göttingen (Applied Data Science) — where the score actually plays a role in selection.
Our recommendation: treat it seriously enough to prepare, but don't panic about it. Since you're taking it anyway and the score appears on your permanent APS certificate, performing well can only help you — especially as more universities may adopt it over time. But don't let dMAT anxiety delay your APS application or your university applications.
Does a Bad dMAT Score Prevent You from Getting Your APS Certificate?
No. APS India's job is to verify the authenticity of your academic documents — not to evaluate your aptitude. There is no minimum dMAT score required to receive your APS certificate. APS India holds your file until the dMAT certificate arrives, then includes the score on your final APS certificate and issues it. The score is information — not a gatekeeper.
What Does the dMAT Replace and What Does It Not Replace?
| Does the dMAT replace this? | Answer |
|---|---|
| APS document verification | ❌ No — APS India still checks all your documents |
| Anabin university recognition | ❌ No — your institution must still be H+ in Anabin |
| TestAS | ❌ No — TestAS is a separate, independent test |
| University admission decision | ❌ No — universities still decide based on your full profile |
| Your grades and CGPA | ❌ No — transcripts still matter most for most programs |
| SOP, LORs, CV | ❌ No — application documents are separate |
| The ₹18,000 APS fee | ❌ No — you pay both APS fee AND €150 dMAT fee separately |

Does Your Degree Need the dMAT? Search Here.
The classification is based on your exact official degree title as shown on your certificate — not what you plan to study in Germany, not informal descriptions. If your degree title sits on the border between categories (e.g. "Engineering Management", "Financial Technology", "Industrial Engineering"), your status is decided by the official APS India Affected Fields list, not by assumptions. When in doubt, email APS India at info@aps-india.de with your exact degree title.

If your exact degree isn't listed, email APS India at info@aps-india.de with your official degree title.
⚠️ The decisive factor is always your official degree title. If your degree says "B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering" — dMAT required. If it says "B.Sc. Computer Science" — exempt. "B.A. Economics" — required (Economics is in the Commerce/Finance/Economics category). "B.Sc. Statistics" — exempt. When a degree title is genuinely ambiguous, email info@aps-india.de before registering and paying €150.
What About Interdisciplinary Degrees? (Business Analytics, FinTech, Industrial Engineering, Data Science MBA track etc.)
Interdisciplinary and hybrid degrees that fall between categories are assessed individually by APS India based on the official degree title and program structure. APS India published a full Affected Fields List in PDF format alongside the announcement. For any degree that sits between Engineering and Science, or between Business and Technology, do not assume — verify with APS India directly before registering for the dMAT and paying €150.
How to Register for the dMAT
- Go to gast.de/portal and create your account.
- Choose your preferred test center city from the available options.
- Complete registration and pay €150 — payment accepted by g.a.s.t. only, not APS India.
- Save your login credentials — you'll need them to download your score certificate after 12 October.
- You'll receive a confirmation with test center address and reporting time.
Register early. Seats in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru will go fast once students realise the September 15 deadline is approaching. There is no waitlist once a center is full.
Frequently Asked dMAT Questions
Is the APS Certificate Mandatory?
Yes — every Indian student applying for a Bachelor's or Master's degree at a German university needs an APS certificate. This applies to public universities, private universities, and online programs from German institutions.
Who Is Exempt from APS?
- Students receiving stipends from public EU or German-funded scholarships.
- Students with an international secondary school degree (IB, A-Levels) applying for Bachelor's.
- Students who obtained a non-German degree in Germany or hold a foreign degree outside India.
- PhD/PostDoc candidates where the German university explicitly does not require APS.
- Students attending a short course under 90 days in Germany.
Is TestAS Required for APS? The Biggest Misconception
TestAS is NOT mandatory for the APS certificate itself. You can receive your APS certificate without taking TestAS.
However, many German public universities require TestAS scores as part of their admission process. Apply for APS without waiting for TestAS — these are parallel tracks. Students who cleared JEE Main and Advanced are exempted from TestAS entirely.
I've seen students wait 3–4 months for their TestAS date before starting their APS application — then run out of time for university deadlines. Start APS immediately and register for TestAS at the same time. These are parallel tracks, not sequential.
Documents Required for APS in 2026
APS requires coloured A4-sized photocopies of all documents (both sides), not originals.
| Document | Class XII | XII + Part Bachelor's | Full Graduates / Master's | JEE Track |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Critical Document Rules
- Do not send originals. Coloured A4 photocopies only.
- Both sides of every document must be photocopied, even if one side is blank.
- Regional language documents need a notarized English translation.
- Do not forget the Student Authorisation Letter — separate download from aps-india.de/checklists, not auto-generated with the application form. Most common reason for delays.
⚠️ Language certificates are NOT required for APS. IELTS, TOEFL etc. go directly to universities. Note: PTE, Duolingo, and LanguageCert are not accepted by the German system. TOEFL iBT Home Edition is not accepted for a German student visa.
APS Certificate Fee in 2026
The APS verification fee is ₹18,000 (approximately €225) — non-refundable under any circumstances.
Option 1: CCAvenue (Recommended)
Pay via credit card, debit card, net banking, UPI, or wallets through CCAvenue during Step 7 of online registration. Payment matched instantly, account activated automatically.
Option 2: Bank Transfer (Offline)
Transfer ₹18,000 to the APS Kotak Mahindra Bank account. Include the transaction receipt in your courier package. Manual matching takes several days and delays processing. Always prefer CCAvenue.
How Long Does APS Take?
Official processing time is 3–4 weeks from when APS receives your documents and payment. During peak seasons before Winter Semester deadlines, this can stretch to 6–8 weeks.
- Registration and CCAvenue payment — same day activation.
- Courier delivery to Delhi — 2–5 days.
- Bank transfer matching (if offline) — 2–7 additional days.
- Document verification — 3–4 weeks from when processing starts.
- Certificate issuance — digital (DigZert) PDF sent to your registered email.
Wait — you thought Germany was free?
You're about to pay ₹18,000 for APS. Before you spend that, understand the complete picture — semester contributions, blocked account requirements, and three scenarios where Indian students do pay tuition.

Does APS India Conduct Interviews?
APS India does NOT conduct face-to-face academic interviews. What can happen is a phone verification call for applicants still pursuing their Bachelor's — a basic 20-minute conversation. Most applicants receive no call at all. If scheduled, you'll be contacted 10–14 days in advance.
The December 2025 Digital Seal Update
In November 2025, APS India replaced its digital seal card after a security vulnerability (EUCLEAK) was found in Infineon chips used by D-Trust / Bundesdruckerei. If your certificate was issued before December 2025, it remains fully valid. Adobe Acrobat may show "Signature Invalid" — this is a technical display issue only, caused by the deactivation of the old seal card, not a document validity issue. Under EU eIDAS regulations, the seal is valid if it was created with a valid certificate at the time of issuance and the document has not been modified.
⚠️ Golden Rule: Never rename your APS certificate file, modify the PDF, or merge it with other documents. Submit it exactly as received — the digital signature breaks if you alter the file in any way.
Most Common APS Mistakes That Delay Your Certificate
- Forgetting the Student Authorisation Letter — separate download, not auto-generated, mandatory.
- Sending originals — APS needs coloured A4 photocopies, both sides.
- Not photocopying blank reverse sides — even blank backs must be copied.
- Using bank transfer instead of CCAvenue — delays payment matching by days.
- Modifying your APS certificate PDF after receiving it — breaks the digital signature.
- Applying from an H+/- or H- university — APS won't process; check Anabin first.
- Submitting distance education in restricted fields — medicine, law, architecture, pharmacy, hotel management not recognized.
- Not registering for dMAT if your field requires it — if you're in Engineering, Commerce, or Business and registering APS on or after June 29, 2026 for SoSe 2027 or later, you need it.
- Sending 500 follow-up emails to APS — they receive 500–1,000 emails per day. Excessive emails can trigger an automated ban from their system.
APS for Private German Universities
Yes — the APS certificate is accepted by all German universities, public and private. It's also required for your student visa at VFS regardless of institution type. However, your Indian university must hold "H+" status in Anabin. Always check anabin.kmk.org before applying.
Frequently Asked Questions
The APS process is not complicated — it's just unforgiving of mistakes. Get your documents right the first time, pay via CCAvenue, don't forget the Student Authorisation Letter, register for dMAT early if your field requires it, and apply early. That's 90% of the battle.
